Photo Voltaic (PV) Solar Power
PV Solar power has been around since 1954 when researchers at Bell Telephone were examining the sensitivity of a properly prepared silicon wafer to sunlight. By the late 1950's PV cells were already being used to power US Space Satellites. The technology stayed fairly flat until the the 1970's when the oil embargo's thrust PV back into the mainstream but was then sort of put on the back burner again over the next thirty or so years.
The last 5 years have seen an incredible outpouring of private and public capital toward the renewable energy sectors, with PV Solar Power the beneficiary of a significant portion of these investments. The installed cost of solar is literally decreasing by the week as companies find ways to make the manufacturing processes more cost effective through technologies such as thin-films, concentrated solar and higher energy conversion efficiency.
PV Solar Power installations still carry a fairly heavy initial investment price-tag, but, when properly packaged with complementary products such as a Solar Thermal Water Heater, Energy Star Lighting and Appliances and other High Efficiency upgrades achieving 90% Independent Power production is a reality.
The government currently offers a combined 35% Tax Credit for installed Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal systems. The system must provide electricity for the residence, and must meet applicable fire and electrical code requirements.
